Having eternal life begins with first believing Messiah came to earth to pay the penalty for our sins. We then need to repent of our sins to walk in newness of life. This does not mean we no longer have to obey him as many suppose. Listen to his words:
Do not think that I came to destroy the Torah or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to complete. (Footnote: The Law and the Prophets is a term used for the pre-Messianic Scriptures. These were not done away with.) For truly, I say to you, till the Heaven and the Earth pass away, one yod or one tittle shall by no means pass from the Torah till all be done. Whoever, then, breaks one of the least of these commands, and teaches men so, shall be called least in the reign of the heavens; but whoever does and teaches them, he shall be called great in the reign of the heavens. For I say to you, that unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you shall by no means enter into the reign of the heavens. Matthew 5:17-20 TS2009
Do you think you are saved at that point? Understand Messiah’s words again:
But he who shall have endured to the end shall be saved. Matthew 24:13 TS2009
Do you not know that those who run in a race indeed all run, but one receives the prize? Run in such a way as to obtain it. And everyone who competes controls himself in every way. Now they do it to receive a corruptible crown, but we for an incorruptible crown. Therefore I run accordingly, not with uncertainty. Thus I fight, not as one who beats the air.
